Civics

The branch of political science that deals with civic affairs and the rights and duties of citizens.

A branch of learning that treats of the relationship between citizens and their society and state, originally called civil government. With the large immigration into the United States in the latter half of the 19th century, civics became a subject in the secondary schools and colleges through the influence of the National Education Association and other organizations.

“Not many Americans realize that they own nearly one-third of the surface area of the country as well as the mineral-rich outer continental shelf. Huge deposits of oil, uranium, natural gas and other mineral wealth can be found on public lands, along with rich supplies of timber, grazing lands, and fresh water.”
